Nova Scotia Islands documentary airs Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 12 Noon. With intriguing pasts and mysterious happenings, the islands of Nova Scotia have been the setting of stories that stir the senses and rouse the imagination. Abandoned settlements and homesteads, lighthouses and keepers, fisherman and fishing grounds, pirates and treasure, contagious diseases and mass burials, ghostly apparitions and lost cemeteries are all highlighted in this homage to Nova Scotia's colourful island history.

Islands are part of the geography and history of the Maritimes, nowhere more so than Nova Scotia. Jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, there are more than 3,800 islands that lie scattered along nearly 5,000 miles of coastline. Nova Scotia Islands is a half hour documentary that explores some of the most interesting islands in the province, their little known histories, and in some cases, their uncertain futures.  

Nova Scotia Islands was co-written and directed by award-winning Halifax filmmaker Lorna Kirk (A Little Bit of Freedom) and produced by Edward Peill from Halifax-based Tell Tale Productions Inc.

“I don't think people are aware of the amazing history associated with the 1000's of islands that ring Nova Scotia's beautiful shores” says director Lorna Kirk. “You've got everything from pirates to ship wrecks to whimsical fairgrounds. In many ways the history of these islands reads like a good mystery novel.”

Nova Scotia Islands features three notable islands. One that has assumed many roles including protecting the province’s capital city, another that went through an intense tug-of-war between land developers and conservationists, and the last, a micro-nation, that found itself at the epicenter of an international dispute with the United Nations.

Nova Scotia Islands will have its world broadcast premiere on CBC Television’s Land & Sea on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 12 Noon.

For the past 20 years or so, no cruise to the Broughtons was complete without a visit to Lagoon Cove Marina for a taste of the hospitality and charm of its owners, Bill and Jean Barber. Broughtons regulars were saddened to learn of Bill’s death in early April at age 78 after a recurrence of cancer.

Bill’s bottomless buckets of prawns, tall tales and laconic humour brought cruisers back to Lagoon Cove season after season. He and Jean also took a lead in promoting the Broughtons as a cruising destination, working with nearby marina operators to get this unique destination on BC and Washington
State cruisers’ radar.

Barry Goodyear of Ra Kon Marnie Surveyors in Innisfil, Ontario was telling us about  a boat he recently surveyed. Severe electrical problems prompted the owner to re-wire an accessory. A 6’ length of wire was carefully stripped and even in the middle of the insulated area, there was the tell-tale green “fuzz” corrosion that results from saltwater exposure.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
