Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month – Andy Roy and his crew!

Andy Roy and Crew

Dec 19, 2019

Keep calm and sail on” was the motto for Andy Roy’s crew at the 2019 International Masters Regatta. Held at the San Diego Yacht Club from October 18-20, the event veterans came back stronger and hungry for a win. Roy comments: “After finishing second in the event the previous year, we knew we had the right ingredients to come back again and pull it off.”

The three-day regatta saw some beautiful conditions with tough and competitive racing. Roy and his crew began the event with a slow start but quickly came back to the top with a bullet in the third race. Continuously battling it out with opponent Sinks, Roy and his crew were only one point ahead of them heading into the final race. “The regatta title came down to a “do or die” final race with another very strong competitor.  We managed to control them at the start and sail on to a wire-to-wire win and the overall trophy.

As the first Canadian crew to win this event, the team took pride in setting Canada on the map. Roy comments on the key to a successful crew, “ it’s all about trusting each other to perform at our respective positions on the boat; consistent positive and calm communication. Be sure to both formulate a gameplan before each race and also debrief (with note-taking) at the end of the day. Most importantly, remember that it’s just a boat race, so have fun out there!”

Frind has an Italian style brick pizza oven for gourmet pizzas and a great selection of other menu items.  You can eat on the patio, at a picnic table, on the beach, or on the lawn. You can also get your order to go and enjoy your meal out on the lake.
