“Trawler Yachts” in the Maritime Style

Donelle Boat Builders

New England style lobster yachts get lots of attention and rightly so, as many are beautiful boats. However for those looking for a rugged cruising yacht they can take just about anywhere, yacht versions of Atlantic Canada’s fishing boats are worth a closer look. What they may lack in elegance compared to the Maine style lobster yacht, the Maritime boats make up in seakeeping and capacity. This is especially true for the Cape Island style Nova Scotia lobster boats, which have evolved into beamy beasts with room for accommodations which would rival a small condo. These boats are built in numerous yards and details can be found on the website of the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association: www.nsboats.com.

The two examples are shown here. The green boat is by Donnelle Boatbuilders and is typical of the Northumberland style of fishing boat with a sharp flared bow and easily driven hull. The “Cape Sable Grace” was built by Apple Island and shows the incredible capacity of the South-West Nova Scotia lobster boats.

Marinelite has been making rugged windows for the commercial fishing fleet for many years and their product was used in both of the boats pictured here. www.marinelite.com
