The Marlow Marine Cruising Club 20th Annual Spring Rendezvous was held on May 5th thru May 8th at the Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club in Marathon, Florida. A record number of members and guests arrived by boat, plane or car to attend this highly anticipated event. Those arriving by boat were treated to a full exterior washing by the select crew upon their arrival.

At registration check in, attendees were given a custom embroidered boat name goodie bag. The Cinco de Mayo theme was prevalent with the Margarita glasses and the custom Fiesta tin with multi colours throughout. A beautiful relaxed setting with warm summer breezes greeted guests as they arrived for the Welcome Reception. A carefully selected menu provided the Fiesta flare with Mexican cuisine, passed hors d’ oeuvres and open bar. The true spirit of the event could readily be seen as members greeted old friends and met new members.

The following two mornings, after breakfast, seminars were given to a filled room. Seminars were purposely selected to be meaningful to members. In addition to the seminar topics of engine maintenance, A/C and heads maintenance, Yacht Controller demo and product update, members were presented with a very special
presentation on Cuba Bound travels by boat. The seminars concluded with the ever popular Marlow Round Table discussions led by David Marlow and the Marlow Crew.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
