RCM-SAR Launches New Fast Response Craft

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 08 in Delta launched a new Type 1 Fast-Response boat at Captain’s Cove Marina July 27. The new vessel, purchased by the Delta Marine Rescue Society with funds raised through donations and grants, will serve station 08’s main area of responsibility, including Boundary Bay, the southern Strait of Georgia, and the San Juan and Gulf Islands, from its base at Point Roberts Marina.

The Spirit of Delta V exemplifies the improved seaworthiness and sophisticated equipment now available in vessels for SAR operations. It’s a nine-metre rigid-hull inflatable powered by twin Yamaha 250-hp outboards, capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots with a range of 250 miles. It replaces an 11-year-old Titan 249XL, and is completely equipped for SAR, with state-of-the-art electronics, high-powered searchlights, night vision and extensive first-aid equipment. It is self-righting in case of unexpected rollover and features the new Shockwave Integrated Controlled Environment (ICE) shock-absorbing console to lessen the impact of heavy seas.

The vessel normally carries a crew of four – a coxswain and three crewmen – but is capable of a large overload in the event of a serious marine accident.

Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
