New Ideas: It’s a Dock; It’s a Boat – Terraflo

Terraflo

The Captain top of the line model

Feb 27, 2025

Here at OnBoard, we see a string of new boating products but rarely is there one that falls into an entirely new category. And a Canadian one at that!

underway it’s a calm water boat

Terraflo, a family-run Quebec-based company that builds unique handcrafted pontoon docks that are also boats under certain circumstances. Here’s how it works – Like a conventional pontoon boat, the floating support comes from Floating HDPE boxes filled with expanded polystyrene.. Where Terraflo differs is above that – the structure of the boat is made of Quebec-treated wood approved for aquatic use and decked with Western red cedar.

It’s a dock when moored

The craft functions and looks like a lakefront dock until it is cast off and becomes a low-speed boat that can take passengers out into the lake for boating activities, like swimming, diving, fishing perhaps and relaxing.

Behind the enterprise are Julie Guérard and Christopher Al Tork who conceived of and a now building, luxury finishing and promoting their idea as it transforms from a concept to a Canadian original.

A powered diving platform

The premise was developed on one of Quebec’s restricted lake where the Terraflo craft can be outfitted with a low-power electric motor.  It’s like having a boat at the dock of the cottage that you use for on-the-water activities except that the dock and the boat are the same unit.  There are similar restricted lakes in many provinces including constraints such as electric only, speed restrictions etc. creating opportunities for these low-speed craft, which are really only suitable on calm lakes and rivers in any case.

There are three models of these craft from the basic Le Matelot to The Captain with two benches two armchairs and a fishing rod holder. Pricing is around $10k if you pick yours up in Lachine QC. The Terraflo has already sold over 200 boats, were at the Ottawa Boat Show this week and are headed to the Toronto Cottage Show in March.

Spotted! Canadian Boating in Antigua & Barbuda

By Mathew Channer

I wore my Canadian Boating cap everywhere I went in Antigua, for the sun, not for the shout-outs. But I sure received a lot of them.

Antigua Sailing Week is an international regatta that draws sailors of every level and spectators from all over the world. Yet I couldn’t walk across a room without being hailed by a Canadian who was as excited to see my cap as they were to see the racing. I met many who were on their 3rd, 4th and 5th visit.
