Port Credit Spring Boat Show Offered Enthusiastic Crowds and Great Attendance
The Port Credit Spring Boat Show from May 23 – 25, 2014 was a huge success. With the weather cooperating the crowds were able to enjoy a terrific venue and browse the boats and exhibits available. Show organizers were thrilled with the number of people who came by to have a good time and check out the offerings.

71st Swiftsure International Yacht Race
The 71st Swiftsure race was a good one. Saturday morning was sunny with the wind WSW at 15 knots and promising to build throughout the day, and the tide was on the flooduntil late afternoon making it a challenging start.

Martyrs’ Shrine Celebrates The Second Annual Blessing Of Boats & Waterways
The second annual Blessing of Boats & Waterways was hosted this past Saturday afternoon, at the town docks in Midland. The event saw 28 boats take part in the blessing. The Martyrs’ Shrine worked closely with Parkbridge Marinas to organize the celebration in time for the beginning of the boating season. Father Bernard Carroll, SJ of the Martyrs’ Shrinecarried out the duties of the blessing while standing upon the bow of a 65’ Linwood Huckins yacht, W.F. Morneau’s “La Belle Helene.” The occasion was made all that much better because we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. Many of the boaters that took part in this event had looked forward to the blessing of safe voyage and return for the upcoming boating season. This is still a fairly new occurrence in the area, but the implications of this event are historic and have had a significant impact on the community and waterways of Georgian Bay for hundreds of years.

Etobicoke Yacht Club Honours Hans Fogh
Etobicoke Yacht Club has christened its new race committee boat in honour of the late Hans Fogh. Fogh a long standing member of Etobicoke Yacht Club raced both Etchells and Solings from the Toronto-based sailing harbour. A hands-on grass roots club and one of the most active on the Great Lakes, EYC has a great reputation for giving back to the sport.

Sailors Assembled for Performance Race Week
Forty-four sailors and 11 coaches recently gathered at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island, Florida for the sold-out 14th annual Offshore/North U Performance Race Week. The week featured racing seminars and on-water training with Offshore Sailing and North U’s expert racing instructors, aboard Colgate 26 sailboats in Southwest Florida’s optimum sailing conditions.

Martyrs’ Shrine to Hold Second Annual Blessing of Boats and Waterways
The Martyrs’ Shrine is setting sail again this summer as they host the second annual Blessing of Boats & Waterways at the Midland, Ontario town docks on Saturday, June 7th. A major celebration in many parts of the world, the blessing of fishermen and the fleet is a tradition going back centuries. By blessing the waters that surround the Shrine and sanctifying the passage for those travelling on the water, this practice pays homage to the early Jesuit missionaries who travelled from the east coast to the interior of Canada over the St. Lawrence River, Ottawa River, Lake Nipissing, and French River until they reached Georgian Bay.

Sailor lets off flares and sets life jacket on fire
Most emergency training in flares only allows practice in letting off the more simple flares. I was intrigued to read that this week a British sailor whose trimaran had become swamped and his navigation system inoperable accidentally set his own life jacket on fire when he let off flares in thick fog. He had to remove the life jacket increasing his vulnerability dramatically.

Ted Gozzard – June 13, 1933 to May 15, 2014
Ted Gozzard is described as a traditionalist, a firm believer in quality and craftsmanship. Raised in Sheffield, England, Ted apprenticed as a carpenter-joiner and gradually earned his journeyman’s papers in boat building, masonry and carpentry. When Ted came to Ontario he worked in the construction business in London, Ontario and designed and supervised the construction of homes and subdivisions there. In his spare time he had built and was sailing a much modified Thunderbird. When the urge to sail full time struck, Ted and his wife, Jan, and their two young sons made the Caribbean their home for two full years.

2014 Metal Boat Festival Anacortes, Washington August 8 – 10, 2014

Canadian Cookbook Sea Salt Wins Third at Gourmand World Cookbook Awards
Sea Salt: Recipes from the West Coast Galley by British Columbia-based authors Lorna Malone, Alison Malone Eathorne, and Hilary Malone (Harbour Publishing; $29.95) has won third place in the 2014 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards’ competition for the World’s Best Fish and Seafood Book. The results were announced at the first Beijing Cookbook Fair on May 20 and 21, 2014, which Hilary Malone attended to accept the award. The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards had named Sea Salt Canada’s Best Fish and Seafood Book in late 2013, which made it eligible for this worldwide honour.

HANS FOGH – Remembering Canada’s Great Sailor and Sailing’s Great Friend
Hans M. Fogh was born March 8, 1938 and on March 14, 2014, Canada lost a great sailor, while the world of competitive sailing lost a great friend.Many people know that Hans Fogh was an Olympic medal winning sailor but he was far more than just that. We at Canadian Yachting have been deeply touched by his life as our leader, John Kerr, was Fogh’s long-time sailing partner and close friend. We are anxious to share with our readers, a review of the many and very significant accomplishments Fogh achieved during his lifetime. It is an impressive legacy indeed and one that may well have touched you, even if you didn’t know Hans Fogh personally.You probably do know he was an Olympic Medal winning sailor for Canada, but you might not have known that Hans Fogh had also been an Olympic Medal winner for Denmark, his homeland.

Eric Holden – Sailor of the Month, April
ISAF World Cup Mallorca was top of the agenda in April for members of the Canadian Sailing team as a record setting number of sailors flocked to Palma to flex their elite muscles. Isabella Bertold (RVYC) performed consistently well against a stacked Radial roster, placing 11th overall while Greg Douglas (RCYC) showcased several top ten race results throughout the event finishing 12th in the robust Finn fleet. Robert Davis (KYC) battled with the Laser big guns posting two top 5 scores ultimately wrapping up his event in 18th.

Clean Wake Program Targets Ontario Cottage Owners
Recreational boaters can take action for cleaner lakes and better health. Summerhill Impact, in partnership with Environment Canada and Honda Canada Inc., has launched the 2014 Clean Wake Program in Ontario just in time for the start of cottage season. Clean Wake offers recreational boaters a chance to trade-in their old polluting conventional two-stroke outboard engines in exchange for a ten percent discount towards the purchase of a new Honda four-stroke outboard engine. All old and inefficient two-stroke engines collected will be responsibly recycled through certified auto recyclers.
