Sharks celebrate Homecomers 60
This year’s Homecomers Regatta, held at he Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club (NOLSC) on September 21 and 22 was a special event as it was also a celebration for the 60th Anniversary of the Shark 24.

RCYC Team misses the podium at NYYC Invitational
It all came down to the final race, as it should. Two teams of accomplished and motivated amateur sailors from opposite corners of the globe battling on a lumpy, windy Narragansett Bay for one of Corinthian sailing’s most-prized trophies, the 2019 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) can come from anything that burns a carbon-based fuel (gasoline, propane, charcoal, oil, etc.). It can be created by engines, gas generators, cooking ranges, heaters, etc. CO acts a lot like air. It doesn’t rise or fall, but spreads evenly throughout an enclosed space and is very toxic.

Remote Marine weather station Alert!
It has come to our attention that the weather stations at Fanny Island, Sentry Shoals, Sandhead and Saturna Island have been out of commission for several months creating unsafe conditions for boaters.

Electric PWC previewed in Toronto
Taiga Motors, the Canadian company behind the world’s first electric snowmobiles, rolled out their first electric personal watercraft, Orca on Toronto’s Harbourfront on September 17. It’s in the mood of Tesla with a carbon fibre hull – a classy execution with an initial special edition price tag of US$28K to match!

BNI Challenge Regatta – August 24
It was a riveting scene: sailboats from various yacht clubs with courageous mobility-impaired sailors unconfined by wheelchairs—all united for the 7th annual BNI Challenge to raise money for equipping these brave sailors and running an extraordinary program called Association québecoise de voile adaptée (AQVA).

Shellbacks re-convene for season
Officially started in February 1934, The Shellback Club is celebrating its 86th year. To be “Shellback” today only requires attending a lunch meeting and joining everyone in singing a sea shanty. The location, as in past years, is the RCYC at 141 St George Street at Prince Arthur in Toronto (west exit of the St. George TTC station).

Operation Life Jacket – Thornbury Ontario

Largest New Build Yacht to be Built by Crescent Custom Yachts
Crescent Custom Yachts has a Gregory C. Marshall designed Crescent 164’ (50m) under construction in their shipyard in Richmond, BC. The project was sold to an American client who has named the yacht “Danzante Bay” after his resort and golf course in Loreto, Mexico.

Big news: New Sailing Event at 2024 Olympics: Mixed Two Person Offshore
Not without some controversy, World Sailing is introducing some changes for the Olympics. For the first time in Olympic sailing history, a Mixed Two Person Offshore Keelboat event will be on the programme at the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition.

Stolze Cup
The Stolze Cup is awarded annually to the regatta’s winning match racing skipper from a LYRA member club. This year’s event was held at RCYC Aug 10-11, 2019 in Sonars. There were eight teams competing from four countries including an all-women team from RCYC.

Canada’s great showing – three PanAm medals
Sailing at the 2019 Pan American games wrapped up on August 10 in Paracas, Peru. The event saw an array of conditions that made for a challenging event for our Canadian sailors. With the final medal race of the event in the Sunfish, Canada added another medal for a total of three.

Helly Hansen Chester Race Week 2019: competitive fleets, neck-and-neck racing
Hosted by the Chester Yacht Club in the picturesque South-Shore Nova Scotia village of Chester in mid-August each year, Helly Hansen Chester Race Week is Canada’s largest keelboat regatta (four days of sailing) and plays host to more than 120 boats from near and far. Chester’s sailing regattas were first documented in 1856.

What Plan, Your Plan… Strategic Priority #5 Communications
