Le designer Ray Wall n’est plus

La marque de voiliers CS Yachts – le CS étant l’acronyme de Canadian Sailcraft – même si elle n’existe plus, jouit encore de nos jours d’une excellente réputation. Ray Wall, l’un des designers du chantier, y a aussi laissé sa marque. Décédé à 91 ans en décembre dernier à Vancouver, il a été le concepteur des CS36, CS33 et CS27, ainsi que du Quanta 28.

Lorsque CS Yachts de Brampton, Ontario, a lancé le CS27 en 1975, il s’agissait d’un pas de géant qui allait en faire l’un des trois grands constructeurs de voiliers au Canada.  Ray Wall, qui a dessiné le 27 alors qu’il était employé chez Camper et Nicholsons, en Angleterre, a déménagé au Canada en 1977 et a été responsable du CS36 (500 construits, dont le Merlin) et du CS33 (450 construits) au cours de son mandat ultérieur en tant que concepteur en chef chez CS. Il a supervisé à ce titre l’usine de Brampton et le développement des futurs modèles.

Par la suite, il a déménagé à Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique en 1984 où il a fondé Quanta Yachts.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
