Sailing is the first National Sport Federation (NSF) to qualify Canada spots for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

The 2018 Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus wrapped up in Denmark this weekend. Held every 4 years, this event is the largest global sailing competition that includes all ten Olympic fleets. As the first and largest country qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, this event was pivotal for all countries.

After a full week of racing in a wide range of conditions, Canadian Sailing Team members, Tom Ramshaw and Sarah Douglas finished with admirable results. Placed within the top 10, Tom and Sarah officially qualified Canada a spot in the Finn and Laser Radial fleets for the 2020 games.

Tom RamshawDouglas (ABYC, Toronto) worked her way up the scoreboard sailing consistently in the challenging conditions that Aarhus offered with multiple top 5 finishes, including a bullet in Race 6. “I’m incredibly happy with my racing this week. Securing the Olympic spot was the goal and I’m happy to have done that for Canada. Now the focus is to rest before heading to Japan in September for the next World Cup in Enoshima and setting up training for the year.”

Ramshaw (SLYC/RCYC) finished 5th place after the medal races. The Toronto native sails out of the Stoney Lake Yacht Club and has been member of the National team since 2012. He made his Olympic debut at Rio 2016 finishing 21st.
