New operators at C-Tow Comox

Pasha Barlak and Melissa Curtis of Global Navigation Services Ltd are the new operators of C-Tow Comox; a 24-hour on-water towing and assistance for recreational boaters.  Surrounding C-Tow locations are Campbell River, Nanaimo and Powell River.

Pasha started on the water at age 14 as a Commercial Fisherman.  In 1998, as a ticketed Fishing Master, Pasha took on a new career as an Offshore Seismic Survey Navigator.   Today as a Chief Navigator, Pasha has recently assisted in constructing the world’s widest vessel “Ramform Titan”.  Recently Ramform Titan broke the World Record for towing the world’s largest towed object! Vessel navigation equipment installations, in-sea rigging arrangements, towing and handling are what Pasha enjoys.

Melissa, a farm girl from Ontario, has been a quick study alongside Pasha, taking in all she can about vessel maintenance and operation.  Melissa enjoys fishing and cruising the coastal waters.  With 10 years of on water experience; Melisa recently took the next step and acquired her commercial SVOP license. 

Pasha, known amongst his friends as the “guy you can call at 3am” to happily pull your vehicle out of the snow bank, change a flat tire or trouble shoot “why it won’t start”; along with Melissa, who loves tractors and operating anything diesel, have decided to designate their vessel CB2 as C-Tow Comox.  Pasha’s son Owen, 13 assisted in every stage of the vessel rebuild and is always eager to get out on the water.  Owen is excited at the idea of a summer job as deckhand for C-Tow Comox.

C-Tow Comox is now ready to respond.  Pasha, Melisa and Owen have just completed a three year rebuild on CB2 a 24’ crew boat Manufactured by Surfer Marine. The vessel is rigged for towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery and soft un-groundings.  

Much like an auto club for boaters, C-Tow offers on-water Unlimited Towing Memberships for boaters and anglers for $150 per year. Boaters without C-Tow towing services face costs that average $750 per towing incident, with some paying into the thousands out of pocket.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
