Boating Dogs and their Captains Sail the West Coast

Sailing Dogs

Up to now, doggie boaters have had to rely on perfunctory walks ashore with their boating owners. Now there’s a travel guide for four-legged cruisers in South Islander, Memoirs of a Cruising Dog. Negotiate the rapids with Amanda Spottiswoode and her canine companions. Dog owners will delight in the adventures and misadventures of cruising the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland. South Islander is a humorous, light-hearted memoir based on more than a decade of cruising the coast, hiking off-the-beaten-paths and scouting out the best dog walks in some of the most breathtaking locations on the coast. Featuring 31 exquisitely illustrated maps by Molly March, this book will inspire even the most boat-bound cruiser to step ashore and explore, and have their dogs straining at the leash!

South Islander, Memoirs of a Cruising Dog is available online at FriesenPress.com/Bookstore, Amazon and Chapters. It is also available for order from most book retailers.

About the Author

At the age of 13 Amanda was taught to sail by the Royal Navy on the river Thames and has been a keen sailor ever since. She is now co-owner of “South Islander”, a 34-foot wooden sloop, and has been cruising up and down the B.C. coast with her husband and dogs since 1998. Recently retired from running a theatre company on Salt Spring Island, she now plans to spend more time sailing and finding new places to walk with her surviving Jack Russell Terrier, Moby, who’s mother, Roz, sadly passed away recently aged 16.

About the Illustrator

From Hawaii to London, from British Columbia to Chile, she has painted and designed theatre sets for operas and ballets, theatre and all types of site specific performances. She has been creating shows with Runaway Moon Theatre, Caravan Farm Theatre and Leaky Heaven Circus for the past 30 years. A talented graphic designer, she has created posters for hundreds of shows.
