Online Course Offered by CPS-ECP
July 25, 2017
Twenty students from across Canada, Halifax to Vancouver, studied Near Shore Marine Navigation Level 1, Seamanship, from the comfort of their own home or office during the spring term of 2017. This course was offered online by CPS-ECP instructors.
Content videos of the seventeen sections of the course were made available to the students 24/7 for their convenience. Two sections were covered each week. Accompanying homework assignments were to be completed after reading and viewing the appropriate videos. Each Monday night the instructor held a class discussion to review the concepts of the sections and pose challenging questions to ensure the application of the knowledge learned. This was done using a GoToMeeting format and usually lasted about an hour. The instructors were located in Toronto, the participants across the country.
As well, each of the students was assigned a personal tutor to help him/her with topics that the instructors felt were better learned through face-to-face meeting. Tutors from the local squadron area of the student volunteered to meet every third week. For Near Shore Marine Navigation Level 1, practice with knots, marlinespike and chart work was deemed to be beneficial.
Following a review of materials with his/her tutor at the end of the schedule, the student completed Parts 1 and 2 of the exam and became successfully certified.
This teaching package is available for use to all Squadrons. Contact persons from the Outreach Team are locally accessible to directly assist Squadrons and students with the implementation of this online teaching approach.
