Just Ask John – Are flags worn or flown

Are Flags Worn or Flown?

Mar 25, 2021

Here is a question that was sent to me by one of our members and I was not able to answer it. I am passing it on to our newsletter to see if anyone can provide an answer:

“I just read your article on flags on the CY website and wondered if you could help me with a question.

Many discussions of flags insist that a flag is “worn”, not “flown”. Do you know of any authority for this usage? If such authority exists, does it discriminate according to place or situation of usage (e.g., do warships wear an ensign while post offices fly a flag?)”.

Please send you answer to my e mail address jgullick@cps-ecp.ca

…you understand now why you came this way.
