POTW: The Ice Cream Dock

Ice-Cream

Sept 12, 2024

Michael Alton built this floating ice-cream shack in his New Brunswick driveway last winter out of mostly recycled materials. He then craned it into the water for the big opening. Everything on board the shack is run by solar and battery power

“I wanted to make it look like, you know, like a baseball … snack shack when you were a kid, you know, where you’d go to get a freezie or ice cream at the game,” said Alton.

In a report from theCBC’s Hannah Rudderham, Alton said he didn’t advertise at first, and just started on weekends, but momentum quickly picked up and the family-run affair moved to seven days a week.”All of a sudden, now we have, you know, a community of 5,000 people, and it’s been nothing but positivity, which is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to the internet,” he said.

Alton said he saw hundreds of people on a Saturday, some coming with their own boats and others utilizing the kayaks, paddle boards, canoes and floaties that he sets up on the nearby beach each day.

Ice Cream Dock is located on the Rte 845 and Old Reach Road in Kingston, NB (45.5148200, -66.0028815)

Up to this point, I feel that most electric boats have not been very exciting. The motors have been mainly small portable models for dinghies. There are some high-horsepower motors available, but they look like regular outboard motors to be used on conventional boats. Until now, there hasn’t been an electric boat that really makes a statement. Enter the ENVGO NV1.

Canada’s Superior: the North Shore

Story and photos by Jennifer M. Smith

We’d been north before on a short two-week cruise. At the time, we were unprepared for the isolation, the lack of cell phone coverage, and the spotty VHF reception. Since then we’ve repowered, installed Starlink, and retired from work. Now, with confidence in our engine and our connectivity and more time to sail, we were Superior-ready.
