POTW: Salt Spring sensational

POTW

Jan 11, 2018

Welcome to Photo of the Week 2018. If you are not familiar with this wonderful feature (What???!!!) it’s an opportunity for you to share your fine camera work with the boating nation.

The rules are simple. It has to be your shot taken in and around boats or from a boat. Or anything else boat-y. Or anything you feel is appropriate – docks, ports, winches, engine parts, people – yes, people And pets on boats, of course. And kids.

Send your photos to cyonboard@kerrwil.com with POTW in the subject and we’ll get them into the publication in 2018! Thanks in advance.

To kick off the new crop, here’s a New Years gem:

“Setting sail in early morning from Salt Spring Marina” I took this photo today, December 30 just prior to our departure back to Sidney, Vancouver Island from Salt Spring Marina on Salt Spring Island. The previous day was full of beating rain and so the skipper delayed our departure until today.

It was a beautiful motor/sail back with rainbows, showers and sunshine. All of which told us that the move west from frigid Alberta was a good one as we can now sail all year round.

Sincerely yours,
Kathy Younker

Paving the Way to Cleaner Boating – How a Commitment to Reducing our Environmental Impact is Inspiring Cleaner Boating in Ontario

By Dave Rozycki

Over the past seven decades, Ontario’s marina industry has developed alongside some of Canada’s largest freshwater lakes. Boaters have been able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and create lasting memories on the water, with certain marinas dating back to the 1960s. As we reflect on this rich history, we can begin to see trends in how our footprint may have had an effect on the environment, in not-so-positive ways. However, by embracing innovative solutions and adopting sustainable practices, both marinas and boaters hold the key to preserving and enhancing the quality of our lakes and marine life for generations to come.
