Whether you’re towing a tube or trying out wakeboarding, follow these safety best practices from the boating experts at Legend Boats.

Top Watersports Safety Tips for Families and Boaters

From tubing to wakeboarding and everything in between, watersports are a fun way to enjoy the summer. But no matter who’s on board kids, adults, or both safety should always come first.

At Legend Boats, we’ve helped thousands of Canadian families get on the water safely. Whether it’s your first ride or your fiftieth, here are some key tips to keep your crew protected while having fun.

1. Always Wear a Life Jacket

Tubing

Everyone on the water should wear a properly fitted life jacket. It’s the easiest way to stay safe especially if someone falls off a tube or ski. Check that it fits snugly: lift your arms, twist around, and make sure it stays in place.

2. Use the Right Equipment

Not all tow points are the same.

  • Aft rings are made for towing tubes.
  • Ski pylons and tow bars are for skiing and wakeboarding.

Using the correct one avoids damage to your boat and helps prevent accidents. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before setting up.

3. Check the Weather and Water

Before heading out, check the forecast. Watersports are best on calm, sunny days. Sudden wind or waves can turn dangerous quickly. If the water looks rough — wait it out or reschedule.

4. Designate a Spotter

Waterskiing

One person should always watch the rider while another drives. This “spotter” helps communicate with the driver and keeps an eye on the rider at all times.

5. Inspect Your Gear

Before launching, check your tow ropes for knots or frays. Look over tubes, wakeboards, or skis for damage. A quick look could prevent an accident later.

6. Stay Sober

It’s illegal and unsafe to drive a boat under the influence and that includes towing. Save the celebration for after the ride.

7. Know Your Boat’s Features

Legend Boats are designed with safety in mind. Our removable solid aluminium ski pylons, built-in ski pylons, tow bars, and aft rings are easy to use, but they serve different purposes. If you’re unsure, your Legend dealer can walk you through it.

Sailing into the Future at Antigua Sailing Week

By Mathew Channer

“Standby tack,” Canadian sailor Katy Campbell orders. The crew scrambles over the sheet lines and braces on the deck.

“Three, two, one, tack!”

I wait until the bow turns into the wind and the headsail snaps over, then crawl over the cabin top of Panacea X to the now windward side. The trim team smoothly sheets on the headsail and a competitor vessel shoots past our stern, feet away, as our Solana 45 beats eastward along Antigua’s south coast.
