Destinations: SVG opens to Canadians for boating

St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) never officially shut its borders to tourists and remains open for business, poised to welcome visitors once they are permitted to travel from their respective countries. In March, SVG took strict measures to contain the spread of the virus and with few visitors able to reach the destination due to restrictions in travelling from other countries, the destination has seen a relatively low number of cases. 

Canadians will be able to reach SVG by air  once again through a direct route from Toronto to the main island of St. Vincent with Air Canada which plans to resume service in July 23 2020. 

Attached are the updated entry requirements by air and below for yacht:

• Completion of forms at Ports of Entry (PoE). The POE’s currently accessible are Blue Lagoon, Wallilabou and Port Kingstown.

• All arriving yachts will request permission for entry by email to coronavirustaskforcesvg@gmail.com.

• An online risk assessment form must be completed prior to arrival.

• Once accepted for entry, after initial screening, yachts will proceed to designated area(s) for on-vessel quarantine.

• Mooring at designated areas* will be at the cost of the yacht. 

• Those who opt for SVG COVID-19 PCR testing will remain onboard until results are received. If negative, no further quarantine will be required. If positive, they will be isolated at a government facility for care and treatment. Both testing and isolation will be at the cost of the yachts.

Please note that this protocol may be revised at any time at the discretion of the Health Services Subcommittee of the National Emergency Committee/COVID-19 Task Force, Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.
