Pet-Friendly Staycruising in Ontario

Apr 24, 2025

Looking for an unforgettable dog-friendly vacation this travel season? Le Boat invites dog lovers to experience a holiday with their furry companions — four-legged friends are welcome aboard.

“Dogs are a huge part of our families, and more and more travellers are choosing their vacations based on accommodations that are pet friendly and allow guests to bring their dogs,” says Lisa McLean, North American Marketing Manager at Le Boat. “Our cruises offer the freedom to explore at your own pace, with plenty of space onboard and lots of opportunities to go ashore for your pup to run around and enjoy.”

Why Dogs (and Humans) Love Cruising with Le Boat:

  • No Boating Experience? No Problem.
No previous boating experience or license is required when you rent your own private houseboat with Le Boat. All boats are easy to drive and fully equipped for first-time cruisers. Upon arrival, the Le Boat base team provides a full orientation to ensure you and your crew feel confident operating the boat safely. All Canadian boats come with bow and stern thrusters, making docking and navigating locks a breeze.
  • Flexible Itineraries:
Stop and explore whenever you like—whether it’s for a long walk, a riverside picnic, or a pet-friendly café. Choose from 3–4-night getaways or week-long (or longer!) vacations. While Le Boat provides sample itineraries and regional cruising guides, you’re free to chart your own course—just return your boat on time!
  • Eat, Sleep, Cruise, and Live On Board:
Boats are designed with comfort in mind for both people and pets. Wide decks, secure railings, and bright, open-plan interiors make for an enjoyable and relaxing journey. All cabins are at water level, which can help reduce motion sickness and ease access for older dogs.
  • Pet-Friendly Destinations:
Many mooring spots are just steps from parks, trails, off-leash dog areas, and attractions that welcome dogs—perfect for spontaneous outdoor adventures with your pup.

The UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal stretches 202 km from Ottawa to Kingston and offers charming small towns, historic lock stations, and tranquil wilderness. The historic Trent-Severn Waterway winds through the Kawarthas Lakes and cottage country, linking Lake Ontario at Trenton to Georgian Bay with 386 km of natural beauty, perfect for relaxed exploration and waterfront fun with your dog. Both waterways are rich with Canadian heritage, know for their pristine nature, and an abundance of outdoor space to share with your four-legged travel companion.

Five Tips for Boating with Your Pet

Planning to cruise with your pup? Here are Le Boat’s top tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for both of you:

  1. Bring Familiar Comforts:
Pack your dog’s favourite things—like their blanket, bed, toy, and water bowl—to help them settle in quickly and feel at home on board.
  2. Create a Designated Dog Zone:
Choose one area on the boat to store your dog’s items and set up their bed or crate. Having a dedicated space can help more nervous pets feel secure in their new surroundings.
  3. Use a Doggy Life Vest:
Even strong swimmers can get into trouble. Bring a well-fitting dog life jacket and keep it on when your pup is on deck, especially near locks or wildlife-rich areas.
  4. Always Bring a Leash:
Not all mooring spots or attractions have off-leash areas. A leash ensures your dog stays safe when exploring new destinations.
  5. Be Prepared for Cleanups:
Pack plenty of doggy waste bags and paper towels to keep things clean and courteous at all stops along the way.

Just when you thought you might never see the Galley Guys again, there they were waving from the flying bridge of a Le Boat Horizon 3 gliding down the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) in the sun. Glorious!
