Charlottetown: Plenty of choices for visiting boaters

Charlottetown makes for an attractive cruising destination. The historic downtown area is compact, interesting and walkable. Boaters visiting Charlottetown have three great options for dockage: The Charlottetown Yacht Club, Quartermaster Marina and Charlottetown Marina.

Starting from the west side of downtown, the CYC’s marina has easy, deep water, bridge free access to the Northumberland Strait. The docks can accommodate boats up to 130 feet overall and 20-foot draft. The marina has metered electrical pedestals, dock lighting, cable TV and telephone capability, and fuel is available.

Rates for visiting yachts are $1.92 per foot under 40 feet, $2.20 for 40 to 50 feet, $3.25 for 50 to 79 feet and $5.10 for vessels over 80 feet.

CYC was established in 1922 and has roots that go back to the late 19th century. For the last 30-years the club has hosted Charlottetown Race Week which runs July 13th to 15th. This popular event draws boats from a wide area and we’ll have more information in upcoming OnBoards.

We should also mention Captain Jack’s Bar & Grill which is located upstairs in the CYC clubhouse and is by all accounts a great post race watering hole.

Quartermaster MarinaQuartermaster Marina

Located at Peake’s Wharf in the heart the Charlottetown waterfront, this marina has dockage for up to 175 vessels, up to a maximum of 56-feet, and provides a complete boating shop, stocked with all boating necessities including ice, water, snacks, and more.

The Marina is owned by Quartermaster Marine, one of the largest boat dealers in Atlantic Canada which means visiting yachts have quick access to a full range marine services.

Steamers Boat HouseCharlottetown Marina

The newest of facility on the harbourfront is Charlottetown Marina. Established 6 years ago and located by Confederation Landing and near the cruise ship dock, the marina is well sheltered from wind and wave. The marina has all the usual services including water, electricity, showers and free WiFi. Steamers Boat House is a floating restaurant located on site. Basic daily rate is $2 per foot up to 50’.

Returning to these waters after many years was both a homecoming…and a tempting taste of cruising adventures to come. We first visited the Broughtons when friends asked us to deliver their sailboat back to Vancouver after a cruise to Haida Gwaii. From Port McNeill we headed home via Alert Bay, the Indian Islands, Knight Inlet, Lagoon Cove and Johnstone Strait. We never forgot the breathtaking vistas of mountains and channels, the easy hospitality of the marinas, the turquoise water of Knight Inlet, the haunting presence of ancient First Nations inhabitants and more recent pioneers, an exciting sail down Johnstone Strait in a booming westerly – and we couldn’t wait to return in our own boat.

Any list of the “Best of the West” iconic boating destinations (CYW August 2013) simply has to include Prideaux Haven. Indeed, many would consider this scenic anchorage in Desolation Sound one of the “Best in the World.”

Prideaux Haven, including Melanie and Laura Coves, is surrounded by numerous islands that create myriad bays and interconnecting coves that are a wonder to explore by small craft. Against the backdrop of the rugged BC coastal mountains, these islands provide excellent protection from the weather.

Lake Erie always feels somehow older, more mature ..It’s been the cradle of boating and summer pleasure for years. Port Dover is a time-honoured port with an established feel, high spirited traditions both old and new and a real character all its own. Fishing and sunning have been going on for a couple of centuries although the town’s best known institution, PD13, the spectacular motorcycle ride-in that occurs every Friday the 13th and has put the place forever on the map – only began in 1981. 

Named for Dover, England in the early 1880s, Port Dover evolved as a fishing port and has been loved by generations as a long established summer resort pretty well ever since.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
