Come Sail with the Classics

Chester Classic

Aug 9, 2018

Chester Classics 2On August 10 – 12 Chester Classics and Gold River Marina will be hosting a regatta in support of Autism Nova Scotia.

While many of the beautiful classic boats from the area will be on hand, races are open to all keelboats; the theme “Come Sail with the Classics” highlights an opportunity for all sailors to get close to the classic yachts under sail and to increase participation.

Topher Wurts, whose family have been coming to the Chester area since the 1920s, sent us this outline of how things will unfold on the weekend.

“We’re encouraging folks to sail one, two, or all three races to encourage the most participation. All races are pursuit style as I’ve observed how popular this format is at Charleston Race Week and it has several benefits: Starting at a time is more amateur and family friendly than a chaotic fleet starting line. I’m hoping that this attracts more boats that are helmed or crewed by juniors, women, families, amateurs, etc. and might become an “entry point” into other racing

One design fleets can participate and get a One Design start at their specific time and within the event and can be easily scored and awarded separately to provide a pretty good one design experience while also getting to be in the mix with the classics and everyone else “coming home” to finish.”

This looks like it will be a low key and fun event for a very worthy cause. Hopefully we’ll get some good action photos and video we can share in a later ONBOARD.

ENVGO NV1: Back to the Future

By Andy Adams

Up to this point, I feel that most electric boats have not been very exciting. The motors have been mainly small portable models for dinghies. There are some high-horsepower motors available, but they look like regular outboard motors to be used on conventional boats. Until now, there hasn’t been an electric boat that really makes a statement. Enter the ENVGO NV1.

Canada’s Superior: the North Shore

Story and photos by Jennifer M. Smith

We’d been north before on a short two-week cruise. At the time, we were unprepared for the isolation, the lack of cell phone coverage, and the spotty VHF reception. Since then we’ve repowered, installed Starlink, and retired from work. Now, with confidence in our engine and our connectivity and more time to sail, we were Superior-ready.
