York Cup Match Race at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club

york_cup_match_race_2010-largeGreat wind made for ideal conditions to run a double round robin, comprising 36 races, for the nine skippers competing for the Grade 3 York Cup Match Race at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club on Saturday, August 7th. Hats off to Chris Cook, the PRO, for his expert race management over the weekend with course changes, square lines and perfectly timed races.

Competing for Canada were: Sarah Bury, David Jarvis, Terry McLaughlin, and Peter Wickwire from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, as well as Magnus Sandberg from the National Yacht Club and Sweden. They were joined by Americans: Kent Colpaert, Will Cyr, and James Denner from the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan. Rounding out the competitors was Reuben Corbitt from New Zealand. The umpire team also consisted of an international group from the USA and Canada.

Leading into Sunday morning, August 9th, Terry McLaughlin lead the group of 9 teams with 7 wins and one loss, followed by Corbitt, Jarvis, and Wickwire. After the Semi-finals, Wickwire and Corbitt both had two points and moved into the finals, while Jarvis was pitted against McLaughlin in the Petit Finals. The great wind conditions allowed for a Consolation round to also be run.

Congratulations to Reuban Corbitt of New Zealand for a well sailed regatta! Finishing in second, Peter Wickwire, followed by Terry McLaughlin, and David Jarvis.

The Doctor wasn't needed today, as a solid SSE system breeze and some localized showers brought plenty of breeze and with it a great degree of variety to the race courses. Winds again ranged from as little as 7 knots to upwards of 20 knots in the localized squalls. The variance in the breeze was to the liking of some and chagrin of others.

The second week of the event is starting to take shape with some interesting story lines developing. In Star land, the series leader after 4 races, defending Olympic Gold Medallists from GBR Percy/Simpson, received their second yellow flag for kinetics (pumping rule) in Race 5, forcing them to withdraw from that race.

Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championships – Anna Tunnicliffe moved into first to tie up the lead with Sally Barkow. Corey Sertl remained in second and Carol Cronin moved into fourth.

Racing on Lake Ontario didn't start until after noon, when the wind came in and settled. After that the race committee pulled off three good races. The conditions ranged from light and variable to wavy with good breeze.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
