Whidbey Island Race Week finds a new home

Whidbey Island Race Week LLC announced March 28 that Point Roberts has been chosen as the new venue for Race Week beginning in 2020. The event will be named Point Roberts Race Week and the date of the event will be July13-17, 2020.

“Point Roberts has everything we need to host a world-class destination regatta,” said Schelleen Rathkopf, event producer and owner. It has an exceptional race area for both big boats and dinghies, a deep-water full-service marina and a comfortable Pacific Northwest summertime vibe. It’s the perfect venue for Race Week’s new home.”

Rathkopf said the goal was to create the largest sailboat racing event on the west coast including racers from both the U.S. and Canada. Race organizers hope to tie in a U.S. sailing national championship as well as have the event included in the Vancouver area racing circuit.

Point Roberts MarinaThis year will represent the 37th year Race Week has been held in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. Organizers needed to find a new home due to failing infrastructure in Oak Harbor and the inability to attract big boats due to shallow water.

One of the attractions of the Point Roberts Marina was its ability to feed the 500-600 people for the indoor/outdoor post-race parties on site. As well, the marina can handle the influx of the over 200 boats that are expected to attend for the daily races that will be taking place.

Yesterday the windsurfer, RS:X and kiteboarder fleets finished their 3 day event in the CORK OCR Regatta. In the Windsurfer Gold fleet, Keith Whiston took gold, with Nick Cox following in second, and Bob Shuttleworth in third. The Windsurfer Silver fleet saw Giancarlo Brotto in first and Diane Houston in second. The RS:X fleet finished with David Hayes in first, Dominique Vallee in second and Caroline Emmanu de Alcala in third. Lastly, the youth Bic293 had a great regatta with Fannie de Alcala taking gold, Gabriel Verrier Paquette in second and Artem Lavrynenko in third. Congratulations to all!

Alan Leibel of National Yacht Club Wins Int’l 2.4mR NA Championships

With fairly consistent easterly winds ranging from 4 to 12 kts, the International 2.4mR North American Championships finished today at The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, Hamilton, Ontario. Oscillating shifts kept the sailors busy especially in the third race when the wind produced 12 kt gusts.

The second race brought out the black flag by CRO Anne Sanderson and the fleet fell quickly into line.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
