Nova Scotia was well represented at the 2017 Optimist North American Championships held over the holiday weekend in Toronto. 178 sailors from 20 countries participated. The Canadian Team consisted of 30 sailors and 3 coaches, including 6 Sailors and Lead Coach from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron Team.

The results for the NS sailors:

-Jackson Macaulay, finished 26th overall – Gold Fleet
-Jack Gogan, finished 32nd overall – Gold Fleet – from
-Maya Heidenreich finished 52nd overall – Gold Fleet
-Noah Adler finished 3rd in Silver Fleet
-Molly Anderson finished 19th in Silver Fleet
Optimus 2-Alexander Roy had great first 2 days of racing including a top 10 on the first day, but unfortunately for family reasons he had to go back to Halifax and could not compete on the Final Series, the last 2 days of the event. He is scored 29th in Bronze Fleet.

Florencia Siccardi, is the National Optimist Coach and Lead coach for this event.

For the first time in many years, Canada had 3 sailors representing the country in the Gold Fleet at an IODA event, all of them from NS. The top 4 sailors in Team Canada, Jackson, Jack, Maya and Noah are from RNSYS, NS.

There were many highlights for our sailors, some were: Jackson Macaulay got a 1st place inOptimus 3 the Gold fleet on the first day of the final series and several top 15s. Molly Anderson won the last race of the event in the Silver Fleet.

Cruising on Canada’s East Coast, at least for those who have never been there, can conjure up images of fierce tides and dense fog. While these conditions do exist at times, they can be managed with prudence and planning. However, there are two large cruising areas that are as inviting as any protected inland lake or river. These are the Bras d’Or Lakes region of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and the Saint John River in New Brunswick. Although the Saint John River runs for over 400 miles from its headwaters in the mountains of northern Maine, it is the approximately 75 miles between the river’s mouth at the port city of Saint John on the Bay of Fundy and the head of navigation at Fredericton, that attract the boater’s attention.

CYA Appoints Curtis Florence CYA’s Rolex Sailor of the Year Award

 

Last night, during CYA's Annual General Meeting, Curtis Florence was appointed CYA’s Rolex Sailor of the Year Award during the Awards Dinner hosted by the Royal Canadian Yachting Club. Curtis’ two sons, Trey (16) and Jordan (12), were present to accept the award on behalf of their father. Curtis was able to make his gracious acceptance speech via SKYPE.

Christening of ABYC mark/pin boat named to honour of Jack Cameron

As a now Honorary but long term member of ABYC, Patrick Lymburner was asked to say something about Jack Cameron, at the christening of the new mark/pin boat named in his honour. Pat was quick to point it that, 'It is not hard to think of the many whose lives were touched by this man, as his contribution to the Sport of Sailing is legendary.'

Jack was an International Judge whose career spanned many years and many World Championships. He was known for his great understanding of the rules and for his strict adherence to proper procedure.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
