LYRA Race Week 2019: July 28 – Aug 4

LYRA Notice

Mar 14, 2019

The first LYRA race week was formed in 1884 at the Queens Hotel in Toronto. It is believed that LYRA is the oldest association of yacht clubs on the continent; no other similar body is known to exist in North America in 1884. The original constitution stated “The object of the Association shall be to encourage yacht building and yacht racing, and to establish and enforce uniform rules for the government of all races in which the yachts of two or more clubs compete.”

In the early years the circuit regatta format predominated. Yachts raced from port to port, day or night, without today’s sophisticated navigational aids.

Today, the annual LYRA regatta brings together yachts from around Lake Ontario and adjacent waters for almost a full week of intensive and exciting racing, including feeder races to the regatta site, the overnight Freeman Races, and three days of around-the-buoys races

LYRA race week will be hosted by the three Oakville Yacht Clubs this year Bronte Harbour Yacht Club, Oakville Yacht Squadron and the Oakville Club. You will be able to witness the awarding of a huge inventory of award hardware and there will be three awards nights, one at BHYC for the distance races, one at OYS for the Easter Seals and one at OC for the course racing. The plans for LYRA entail great racing and great parties. We also will be partnering with Easter Seals for the event.

Currently we are expecting the following One Design fleets – and these fleets presently are designated on the registration pages: 8mR Class, Etchells, J/27, J/80, Laser 28, Olson 30, R-Class.

If you are a fleet representative interested in bringing a One Design fleet to 2019 LYRA Race Week we may be able to accommodate you, please contact our One Design liaison Luc D’Aoust star6631@gmail.com

Nimbus 365 Coupe – A real long-stay cruising boat for exploring

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. Some are day cruisers; some are centre console fishing boats or designed for tow sports. A new live-aboard cabin boat has become a rare item these days.

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
