Spindrift: A Canadian Book of the Sea Book Launch

Location: 634 Humboldt St, Maritime Museum of BC, Victoria, BC

Michael and Anita Hadley, the editors of the Canadian bestseller Spindrift: A Canadian Book of the Sea,will be dipping into Canada’s literary history with an evening of readings that celebrate our maritime heritage.

In the words of Silver Donald Cameron “Given that Canada has the longest coastline in the world and its motto is “From Sea unto Sea,” it is not surprising that virtually every Canadian writer has been inspired to write about some aspect of the sea at some point in their work. As this book shows, those watery passages are some of the very best writing the nation has produced. Journeying coast to coast to coast, from the picturesque and isolated Vancouver Island village of Ucluelet, through the desolate Northwest Passage, to historic Signal Hill at the tip of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, Spindrift: A Canadian Book of the Sea invites the reader on an evocative voyage. Reflecting on a myriad of sea-related themes–including the earliest Indigenous presence, the first nautical exploration of Canada, the arrival of immigrants on the nation’s shores, the realities of making a living on the water, tragic marine events, warfare and celebrated vessels and people–Spindrift paints a compelling portrait of Canada.”

SS Princess Sophia Exhibit starts January 12th

Dive into the History of SS Princess Sophia: The Unknown Story of the Largest Marine disaster along the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Location: 634 Humboldt St, Maritime Museum of BC, Victoria, BC

Dates: Exhibit open from January 12 – March 11, 2018

This exhibit brings together artefacts from multiple organizations for the first time since being salvaged from the wreck. This travelling exhibit commemorates the lives of passengers and crew of this largely forgotten disaster.

The Marine Museum will be closed between December 17th and January 11th in order to install the SS Princess Sophia exhibit.

Spotted! Canadian Boating in Antigua & Barbuda

I wore my Canadian Boating cap everywhere I went in Antigua, for the sun, not for the shout-outs. But I sure received a lot of them.

Antigua Sailing Week is an international regatta that draws sailors of every level and spectators from all over the world. Yet I couldn’t walk across a room without being hailed by a Canadian who was as excited to see my cap as they were to see the racing. I met many who were on their 3rd, 4th and 5th visit.
