West Bay Sonship Contracts New Custom Sky Lounge 72′ Motor Yacht

West Bay Sonship 72

West Bay SonShip, established forty-six years ago, has delivered more than 250 luxury motor yachts ranging in size from 45’ to 110’, but never have they been more excited to introduce and build this stunning new custom 72’ sky lounge vessel.

The exterior design and styling is an easy and instinctive evolution from the incredibly successful 58’ pilot house, nearly one hundred built and continuing to represent West Bay by maintaining a strong resell value in the brokerage market today.

Experience, preparation and opportunity: when an existing 58’ client approached West Bay expressing a desire for a new custom SonShip, the Vermeulens were ready. Naturally the client was looking to extend the overall size and by adding a graceful Sky Lounge, additional length and beam and the wish list was created.

Focusing more space to the heart of the ship, the larger galley and country kitchen dinette allow for functional prep and ample entertaining space. Port Guest Stateroom now offers side by side berths and is no longer just for kids. Master Stateroom fit for a king and queen: king size bed, plenty of drawer chests and hanging locker space, en suite head boasting a double vanity.

It’s not only about increasing interior space, the West Bay design team revisited every aspect of form and function. The result is clean and current cabinetry, the latest interior finishes, the most up-to-date technology in ship systems and powered by the customer’s choice of Twin CAT C18 @ 1000 HP and fuel capacity of 1,200 US gallons.

A significant list of exterior upgrades include: large exterior windows allowing ample natural light; extended Cockpit with moulded aft settee and stationery table offering generous alfresco dining; moulded fiberglass stairway to upper Tender Deck with access to Sky lounge; walk around decks with raised bull works for added safety and ease of maneuverability; swim grid steps port and starboard and aft side deck boarding gate.

West Bay is looking forward to a Summer 2014 launch date and an inaugural debut at the September 2014 Boats Afloat Show in Seattle and February 2015 Vancouver Boat Show.

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
