Vaavud launches Generation 2 Wind Metre

Vavuud Wind Metre

Vaavud, the company that created the world’s first wind meter that transforms smart phones into high tech meteorological tools, aims to further revolutionize mobile wind measurement with a second generation wind metre.

The second generation Vaavud device leverages the company’s proprietary technology, knowledge about wind speed measurement and adds the ability to measure wind direction. The generation 2 Vaavud wind meter has an asymmetrical rotor, a sensor that performs 40,000 measurements per second and draws power from your smartphones’headphone jack.

The rotor design means that it will accelerate just as the wind hits the largest area, and then decelerate again. The ultra-precise sensor can measure these subtle variations in speed, and compare the point of maximum velocity to the compass direction, and thereby give the wind direction.

The popular Vaavud app for both iOS and Android is also compatible with the generation model. The app delivers clear overview of average, actual and maximum wind speed as well as the world’s first realtime graphic handheld wind metre.

The live map gives users access to measurements made by other Vaavud users globally and your personal measurement log is accessible from any mobile device.

‘After receiving rave views for our first Kickstarter campaign and selling over 30,000 units across more than 100 countries we knew, we had to launch our second device of Kickstarter as well’, says Thomas Helms, CEO and co-founder of Vaavud.

‘For us, this is a way to get early feedback from our core users, and allow first movers to catch a good deal on our new product. It helps ease the burden of the initial investment in new production tools’.

Vaavud generation 2 will retail for $60, and will become available November 2014.

The Kickstarter campaign will begin Thursday, July 10 at 10 AM CET and will be active until Tuesday, August 19 with the goal of raising at least $35,000. Backers will receive special promotions including Vaavud at a discounted rate.

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
