Record Breaking Attendance at 2013 Halifax Boat Show

Halifax Boat Show 2013

Now that the Halifax International Boat Show has finished, spring can officially begin!

Boat Dealers and marine retailers supported the show in a big way this year, with new boat lines, new equipment and great deals. Good weather meant that the show had a record breaking attendance day on Saturday and the other days were very steady as well with thousands flocking to Exhibition Park.

“The buzz on the floor was fantastic,” said Show Manager Scott Sprague. “The excitement about the upcoming boating season coupled with the new line of boats debuting and great sales activity made this event one to remember,” said Sprague.

Exhibitors reported solid sales figures with many leads to follow up on in the coming months. Marine Chandleries also reported brisk sales.

Leading up to the show, boaters sent in their entries to the photo contest portraying the boating lifestyle in Atlantic Canada which were displayed at the show. This was extremely popular this year and all of the entries were fantastic. The winner of the competition was Megan White with her photo ‘Look out for that Wave’, second was Stephanie Austin with her photo ‘Raft up on Grand Lake, New Brunswick’ and third was Stephen Sharpe’s ‘Gracie at the Helm’ .

In the seminar room, boaters wishing to sail south were mentored by Rob MacLeod of www.Informedboater.com , racers took advantage of Tristran’s Story of UK Sail’s Racing Rules presentation and Sandy MacMillan of North Sails Atlantic packed the room with his navigation for IPhone and IPad presentation.

Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation entertained children and adults with their saltwater touch tank, and radio station Q104 made sure that everyone coming in the door knew about the fantastic door prize of boat motor and trailer won by Paul Gaetz of Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia.

It was all such a good time that organizers are already actively planning for 2014.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
