New Build at Tern Boatworks

48 Motorsailer

Mar 8, 2016

Bruce Thompson and his crew at Tern Boatworks already have several fine boats to their credit, including a wooden International One Design and a 38ft Lobsteryacht. Currently they are well into the construction of their largest project to date, a 48ft powerboat. Designed by Nova Scotian Laurie McGowen, the new boat combines a very traditional workboat profile with modern wood epoxy construction techniques. Power is provided by a re-built 155hp Detroit diesel with help from a snug gaff rig, which will also aid stability. In keeping with the style of the boat, interior fittings and equipment will be kept simple. Intended for use in southern waters, a clean open interior and plain workboat finish will be comfortable and easy to maintain.

Tern’s shop is located at Gold Water Marina on Mahone Bay. In additional to this major new build they are busy with refits and repairs. Bruce says the lower value of the Canadian dollar has stimulated enquiries coming from south of the border.
