Meet the Comox Bay Sailing Club (CBSC) Racing Team

Comox Bay

Jan 9, 2016

The Comox Bay Sailing Club (CBSC) was founded by a group of local sailing enthusiasts in 1965. The club has had an active racing program since its inception. The club will be the finish of the first leg of this year’s Van Isle 360and the start of the second leg.

Today the Comox Bay Sailing Club owns a fleet of Optimist, 420 and Laser sailing dinghies. These dinghies are actively used by our sailing school, the race team and by club members for both recreational and competitive sailing.
The club has also set up a very interesting program for junior sailors. The idea was to set up a racing team that would be active all summer long.

Mission of the Race Team

A chance to have fun with a purpose! The Race Team is an opportunity for individuals to be introduced to the lifelong sport of sailing. As a race team rather than a summer class, sailors will be exposed to all aspects of the sport such as mental training, physical fitness, and competition. One of the main motivators to attend a program like this is to learn new sailing skills and to enjoy being on the water. The Comox Bay Race Team is meant to be fun and recreational first and foremost.

Goals

Competitive sailing is the same as other competitive sports with the objective always being the achievement of your personal best performances. Sailors will learn to measure this against the skills and objectives they can control. Finishing results are always less important than the learning and execution of the skills they practice. Although dinghy sailing is not strictly speaking a team sport, the club expects sailing team members to attend practices regularly. The skills needed for success often require a number of boats to run effective drills. No matter the individual goals, modest or lofty, team members must participate with enthusiasm and a matching level of effort.

Spotted! Canadian Boating in Antigua & Barbuda

By Mathew Channer

I wore my Canadian Boating cap everywhere I went in Antigua, for the sun, not for the shout-outs. But I sure received a lot of them.

Antigua Sailing Week is an international regatta that draws sailors of every level and spectators from all over the world. Yet I couldn’t walk across a room without being hailed by a Canadian who was as excited to see my cap as they were to see the racing. I met many who were on their 3rd, 4th and 5th visit.
