Meet Don Adams, New CEO of Sail Canada

Don Adams

Jan 25, 2017

A lifelong sport administrator, Don Adams brings a wealth of experience plus a lot of enthusiasm to his new role. Taking up his new position in January, Don is in the process of meeting the many people involved and last weekend visited National Team members training and competing in Florida.

Don’s career has been spent in the national sport sector and he holds a masters degree in sport administration from the University of Ottawa. He participated in sports from his youth and was pretty talented although junior hockey and the like were as far as he took it. As an administrator he has worked with Badminton Canada, Diving Canada and Equestrian Canada as well as Motivate Canada, a not-for-profit involved in developing youth sport leaders.

His goals for the new position are simple – get Canada back on the podium in sailing along side our Para-athletes. The process he sees begins at the grassroots level where young people can fall in love with sailing, then learn that a commitment to a career achieving excellence in the sport translates into success in school and ultimately success in life. Working with the provincial organizations and clubs across the country, the coaches and resource providers, Don hopes Sail Canada can find and nurture and support talented sailors to compete at the highest levels and achieve international podium success..

Then I asked him the obvious question and yes, he has sailed quite a bit. But just between us, Don’s own family boat is a 40-foot Prowler cruiser.

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
