Mark Mattson - Waterkeeper

December 23, 2015

Canadian Yachting Presents Mark Mattson – Canada’s Waterkeeper

The global water crisis is one of the biggest challenges people face. Yet there is a disconnect between what we say about water – it’s important for survival and economies – and what we do about water – pollute it, give it away.

After spending more than 20 years working in the environmental movement, first as a lawyer, then as an organizer, Mattson has identified the six qualities that every water leader shares. He will share those qualities and explain how everyone has the potential to protect a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future.

The key to a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future, Mattson argues, begins with you discovering your “watermark”. Watermarks are the stories that describe your personal connection to water. Everyone has one. Every one is unique. They are the only surefire way to inspire the passion and commitment it will take to ensure a clean water future.

During his talk, Mattson will touch on some landmark environmental cases from his career, as well as contemporary grassroots water issues.

About Mark Mattson

Mark Mattson is a prominent environmental lawyer who has spent the last decade building a network of successful community-focused environmental organizations across Canada.

As a prosecutor, first for government and then for NGOs, Mark was part of groundbreaking private prosecutions and administrative cases against major industrial polluters.

After ten years in the courtroom, Mark began to devote more time to developing institutions that will restore and protect watersheds for generations to come. He founded Lake Ontario Waterkeeper in 2001 and remains the organization’s full-time Waterkeeper and President to this day. Mark’s love of water stems from his childhood summers swimming and fishing on Wolfe Island, near Kingston.

About Lake Ontario Waterkeeper

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is a Canadian charity working for a day when every person in our watershed can safely touch the water, when the water is pure enough to drink, and when the lake is clean and wild enough that you could toss in a line anywhere and pull out a fish. Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is founded on the belief that it is possible to achieve a swimmable, drinkable, fishable world – all we need is commitment to clean water and the right mix of sound environmental policy, transparent and informed decision-making, public education, and community-building programs.

Nimbus 365 Coupe – A real long-stay cruising boat for exploring

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. Some are day cruisers; some are centre console fishing boats or designed for tow sports. A new live-aboard cabin boat has become a rare item these days.

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
