Let’s have some fun!! On Thursday, Friday AND Sunday, join in and play the poker run at this year’s boat show. Simply pick up your score sheet and envelope at the Discover Boating Booth and visit the 7 participating exhibitors for your card. Make the best hand you can out of 5 of the 7 cards are return it, unsealed, to the Discover Boating Booth. Simple as that. Here’s what one lucky winner will receive:

RULES:
1. Only the first 2000 entrants will be eligible to participate.
2. The contest will be held on Thursday, February 9; Friday, February 10 and Sunday, February 12, 2017 during show hours ONLY at the Halifax International Boat Show, Halifax Exhibition Centre.
3. Pick up your entry at the Discover Boating Booth.
4. Visit the 7 exhibitors listed on the score sheet for a card. If they give you a card exactly the same as one you already have, give it back for a replacement. Your hand will not qualify with two exact same cards in it.
5. Assemble your poker hand using the best 5 cards you have.
6. Complete your score sheet.
7. Drop off the completed sheet, cards and envelope UNSEALED to the Discover Boating Booth.
8. The decision of the organizers is final.
9. The organizers reserve the right to change these rules dated January 2, 2017.
10. The winner will be notified on or before Tuesday, February 14, 2017.
11. The winner may collect his/her prizes at the offices of Master Promotions Ltd. 120 Crane Lake Drive, Halifax, NS.
12. Prizes are awarded as is and cannot be exchanged for other products or cash value. ]

14. The Poker Hand Rankings are provided by www.goldenruleofpoker.com and are as follows:
15. No purchase is necessary. Winner will be asked to answer a skill-testing question.

ROYAL FLUSH: Run of sequential cards from Ten to Ace, with all cards of the same suit.
STRAIGHT FLUSH: Run of sequential cards, all cards in the same suit, but not Ace high
FOUR OF A KIND: Four cards of the same rank e.g. four Aces, four Kings, etc.
FULL HOUSE: Three cards of the same rank plus a pair, e.g., three Aces and a pair of Kings.
FLUSH: Five cards all of the same suit.
STRAIGHT(run): Five sequential cards, not of the same suit.
THREE OF A KIND: Three cards of the same rank e.g. three Aces, Three Kings, etc.
TWO PAIR: Two sets of pairs e.g. a pair of Aces and a pair of Kings
PAIR: Two cards of the same rank e.g. two Aces, Two Kings, etc.
HIGH CARD: If you have none of the above, then the highest value card in your hand plays.

Notes:
Aces count high for all hands – e.g. a pair of Aces beats a pair of Kings.
In a straight, an Ace can count low (e.g. A,2,3,4,5,) OR high (e.g. T,J,Q ,K,A) but NOT BOTH (e.g. Q,K,A,2,3, is NOT a straight)
If any card drawn is a duplicate of a card previously drawn, that card must be re-drawn. No hand can have duplicate cards (e.g. you cannot have more than one King of Hearts in your hand).
Prizes are awarded on the poker hand rankings outlined above, not on speed. We want all participants to have fun and remain safe so please take your time on the run.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.
