January 21, 2014 BCA member Kirk Patterson, half through his attempt to be the first foreigner to circumnavigate the entire Japanese archipelago, will discuss the pleasures and pitfalls of cruising in Japan.

He will introduce some of destinations and Japanese cruising customs. Kirk will highlight the depth and breadth of Japanese history and culture, and touch relationship with the sea.

Prior to starting to sail in lived in Japan for 25 years and earned a Ph.D. in international specialization in East Asia studies

BCA fosters seamanship and friendship for people with an active interest in offshore cruising.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:
