Become a Road Warrior!!  Here’s why

The 2018 Canadian’s Regatta in Parry Sound has just wrapped up! Here are some comments from Albacore sailors enumerating what they get from taking their sailing on the road.

·The adventure of discovering new places, people and bodies of water to sail.
· Support and promote sailing elsewhere i.e. Parry Sound & Shelburne.
· Time spent and camaraderie with fellow class members.

· Building/growing friendships with other racers in the fleet, from all clubs.
· Learn more and expand racing/boat knowledge from other top racers in the fleet who travel from all over.
· Experience sailing in various conditions at venues across North America / world.

· It was great to meet the racing community outside of our normal element.
· It’s such a welcoming group they even gave us coaching on the water.

· Making the same mistakes over and over when you’re sailing in your local area gets boring. Travel allows you to make new and exciting mistakes!
· Travelling is a great equalizer. Sure, the top sailors will still be amazing, but they, too, will make mistakes in foreign lands, reminding you that you’re never “done” learning how to sail.
· Anything can happen while travelling, but the fleet will always make the best of the situation. No wind? Go on some boat tours and pick up some tuning tips and tricks! Play games! Make friends! Connecting on a human level will help you forgive these people the next time they vex you on the race course!

· Sailing is new venues expands your sailing knowledge, your adaptability to new conditions, an opportunity to race against different top sailors.
· Time and time again we see Albacore sailors as top sailors in their club, yet fall back in the fleet sailing in unfamiliar waters.
· If you have a desire to be a consistent top 5 racer, you must expose yourself to new venues and expand your sailing/racing knowledge.

· To meet other sailors, & learn about their stories.  It’s nice to be reminded that sailing is a global community.
· To sailing on a different body of water, experience currents and geographical shifts you don’t get in our home pond.
· To have a sailing vacation!

· Opportunity to sail with a group of Albacore sailors who really know the boat, the rules, and tactics
· Opportunity  to spend several days really focussed on sailing the boat in a setting that includes an experienced race committee that knows how to set a course and run a race
· Opportunity for post-race discussions, stories, scuttlebutt, history, review of rules and general socializing, in places you may not have been before, over beers and food.

· Very often we are at beautiful or interesting venues where there’s a lot to see and much to learn.
· Especially if we are used to Friday Night / Harbourmasters / Club Regattas, away regattas provide totally new and different conditions, so we can’t rely on local knowledge.  If you like the challenge, away regattas usually contain even more variables than the Outer and Inner Harbour races we usually do.
· People … though the wind was uncharacteristically light in Parry Sound, the time on shore, horsing around, making small talk, admiring one anothers’ boats, cooling off in the waters of Georgian Bay, and finally helping each other pack up, seemed to bring people closer together.

· You become a better sailor when you travel and sail in different weather and environmental conditions.  Sailing the Canadians in Parry Sound this time around it was my first time launching from the beach so we did a little rudderless sailing.
· You learn more about different methods of rigging.  One of the highlights for many sailors this weekend was when we walked around to the different boats and looked at how they were rigged.  We talked about why the boats were moulded the way they were based on when they were made and the modifications added for optimal performance.  It was a real treat to hear from various owners what changes they made to their boat for better tuning on the water.
· You meet phenomenal & passionate sailors.  Outside of them yelling starboard and for room at mark roundings, albacore sailors are a lot of fun.

· By travelling to other locations to race, you become better and more confident sailor for both racing and causal sailing.  When you become more comfortable sailing in different environmental and wind conditions you adopt better boat handling skills and at the end you have more FUN wherever you go!
