BC’s Coastal Craft Launches Stylish 65’ Concord

With the launch of its first 65’ Concord, Coastal Craft of Gibsons BC marks both its largest build to date and a departure in styling from its smaller designs. At the request of the customer, says president Jeff Rhodes, the aluminum builder has given the 65 a European-influenced profile that is both more upright, with two full decks, and more gracefully swept back than the workboat-inspired styling of its smaller boats.

“This is a very curvy, shapely, complex hull and superstructure that we’ve built in aluminum,” says Rhodes. “I think it’s quite a feat that we’ve achieved the great effect that we did – this is not a fibreglass boat, it’s aluminum.”

The 65 is a big, roomy boat but very well proportioned on its 67’ 6” overall length. The hull design, interior and some engineering on the boat are the work of Victoria-based luxury yacht designer Gregory Marshall’s firm.

The 65 is a high-speed design that stays true to Coastal Craft’s commitment to fast, efficient cruising speeds. Powered by twin Volvo IPS 1200 drives, the boat has delivered 33 knots at wide-open throttle during initial sea trials and cruised comfortably at speeds to 26 or 27 knots, says Rhodes.

“I’m very pleased with the hull. It’s very flat and smooth-riding, and I’m very impressed with how it handles. I credit that to Greg Marshall’s design.

“We’re excited to be offering this style of boat into the Vancouver and Seattle markets, in particular. We think we’ve got something fresh that will appeal to people looking for a more conventional go-fast boat.”

Other notable features:
•             The 65’s three-stateroom layout incorporates a full-beam master amidships, plus two more large cabins, three heads and a generous laundry/utility space.
•             Shower walls throughout are ForzaStone, a laminate of stone, alloy and reinforced plastic that provides a rich look and very high strength with significantly less weight than solid stone panels.

Hiding Out in Belize

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
