Spring 2018 Course Graduates

The Barrie Power and Sail Squadron’s training season has recently gotten underway. We’re offering a wide range of courses from the basic Operator’s Card to blue water cruising. 

CPS 80th LogoThe classroom-based courses run one night a week, from 7 to 9:30 pm. Both CPS members and non-members are welcome. The schedule below can also be viewed at http://www.barriecps.org.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
