Online Courses – Progress Report

Online Courses

Jan 23, 2020

By Eric Phinney, ANEO outreach

This note is to update you on the scheduled offerings of the online versions of Boating 2, 3 and 4 courses for the Winter and Spring of 2020.

The new CPS-ECP Course Catalog Categories include a “07_Online” category which lists the online courses that will be offered in English for both Eastern and Pacific Time Zones. The Course Catalog lists five Squadrons that will be hosting Boating 2, 3 and 4 online courses starting in mid-January.

We are still looking for a Squadron in the Mountain/ Pacific time zone to lead a Boating 4 online course during the Winter/Spring season and we expect to be scheduling a French version of Boating 2 online in the coming weeks.

If your Squadron is considering delivering an online course, particularly B 4 in the West, we offer assistance in set-up and ongoing support. Additional B 2 and 3 online courses can also be added to the schedule, depending on demand, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. Details on how to get involved are provided below.

The B 2, 3 and 4 online courses are now being delivered using a state-of-the-art Moodle format, which includes instructional videos for each lesson (available 24/7), a weekly webinar led by a Host (organizing) Squadron, and a tutor for each registered student. Tutors are CPS-ECP instructors who provide hands-on assistance to registered students.

So, if your Squadron does not have the capacity to deliver Boating 2, 3 or 4 courses during the upcoming training season, or if you have insufficient numbers of registering students for your planned classroom courses, we ask that you consider referring potential students to the scheduled online courses.

Whether referred or not, we also ask your Squadron to support students registering from your city or region by providing tutors on an “as needed” basis. Course fees are shared among the host and tutoring Squadrons. Tutoring involves up to 3 meetings with B 2 and 3 students and up to 5 meetings for B 4. This includes proctoring the exam. Student – tutor meetings can be by phone, online or person-to-person. Guidelines and resource materials are available to assist tutors in carrying out their responsibilities. Tutoring Squadrons receive $45.00 per student for Boating 2 and 3 courses and $75.00 for Boating 4.

To date, we have successfully enrolled over 300 students in CPS-ECP Boating 2, 3 and 4 online courses in partnership with over 30 Squadrons from coast to coast. This partnership arrangement has worked to the benefit of our students as well as both smaller and larger participating Squadrons. Our survey results show that the students surveyed are both satisfied with, and benefiting significantly from, B 2, 3 and 4 online training.

Just when you thought you might never see the Galley Guys again, there they were waving from the flying bridge of a Le Boat Horizon 3 gliding down the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) in the sun. Glorious!

In the past the Galley Guys have travelled far and wide to great locations to explore the good life on a boat. However, this year we stayed in our own backyard for a real treat; cruising The Trent Severn Waterway.
