You’re Invited! Online Speaker Series Session: Marine Radio “Lite”

Jan 23, 2025

Join us on Thursday, February 6, at 7:00 pm as CanBoat Peterborough hosts the first Speaker Series Session of the season featuring John Brewster, Commander of CanBoat RCAF Trenton, about Marine Radio.

John will be talking about common errors and misconceptions, answering frequently asked questions, and providing tips for effective use of your VHF marine radio. In addition, you’ll hear about FLAREX, a live-fire program developed by John to demonstrate the usage and safe disposal of incendiary flares in boating situations. This is done with the full cooperation of the Base Commander of 8 Wing, CFB Trenton and, as far as we know, is the only facility permitting this type of live-fire demonstration.

As a bonus, John will also talk about the Dock Stewardship Program, an educational tool for marina staff to ensure their knowledge of what boaters need when docking in their facility. For boaters, it’s important to know what to expect from the marina staff and what to do if the help is inadequate or incorrect, and how to remedy the situation.

This is a virtual session via ZOOM so everyone is welcome. Following is the link to join the session:

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
