Boating experiences and trip planning:
Joy’s family immigrated from Great Britain in the early 1960’s. Her dad spent a number of years in the British Navy and has always enjoyed boats and boating. Their family rented a Peter Aylings boat, the Blue Goose in the mid 70’s and fell in love with the Rideau Lakes and eventually bought a home on Big Rideau Lake where they still boat today.
William’s grandparent’s summered and eventually moved permanently to Victoria Harbour on Georgian Bay and he most summers boating there. William has always loved the water and built a own cedar strip canoe, was a white water kayaker and William and Joy are both also scuba divers.
In 2002 they decided to purchase a 1995 29 Searay cruiser and traveled the Rideau and Trent Severn systems during their first year. Having enjoyed the lifestyle they moved up to a 1996 37 Searay, which provided a bit more room, a generator and more comfortable sleeping quarters. In the summer of 2007 they took a leave of absence from work and spent 85 days travelling up the Trent-Severn and through Georgian Bay up to the North Channel and back to the Rideau Lakes. It was this trip that made them decide that they really enjoyed the boating life and started making plans for the Great Loop and Bahamas.
The first lesson they learned is that diesel was a prerequisite for any long distance travel so in 2008 they found a new boat, a 1995 Carver 440, and motored it down from lake Simcoe in 2009.
In 2012 with the friends they made from being part of the Ottawa Power and Sail Squadron, four boats made the voyage to New York City via the Erie Canal and Hudson River.

Currently they continue to boat and enjoy summers in the Thousand Islands and Rideau system.
Their planned departure date for the Great Loop is May 2019, where they will once again travel the Trent-Severn to Georgian Bay, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan eventually arriving in Chicago. From there they will travel the inland waters of the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, then to Florida and the Bahamas. Their intention is then to head back up the Intercoastal Waterway in the spring of 2020 and back to Canada.
After that, who knows. They may take the Intercoastal Waterway back down in the fall of 2020 and the Bahamas again, making that an annual voyage or possibly leave the boat in Florida and just cottage with family in Canada during summers and winter south, their options are wide open.
Provisioning details:
It has been a great benefit taking the summers to go on extended trips. They have learnt and practiced many of the different anchoring techniques, determined what is needed in boat systems and provisioning. But most importantly they have determined they can live in a small space for extended periods of time. William and Joy take every opportunity to talk and visit other boaters who are doing what they are planning, and this has helped them prepare.
They are also ensuring they know the boat well, so they can maintain and repair systems as much as possible.
How have CPS-ECP Courses help?
All the CPS-ECP courses have been a great help in learning from the basic rules and regulations to chart navigation and cruise planning.

They have had some great instructors. Sue and Ted Baker, Robert Morgan, Frank Keating, Guy Ladouceur, Monique Peland, Jim MacLeod, Robin Craig and Walter Bilous. “Not only have they been able to teach the courses but provide a lot of their own boating experiences that enhance the CPS-ECP experience.”
What advice do you have for fellow members planning a similar adventure?
Depending on your cruising intentions, sign up with associations such as America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association http://www.greatloop.org/ and/or Marine Trawlers Owners Association http://www.mtoa.net/
There are also numerous groups on Facebook.
All these associations and groups provide answers to many of the questions that one is bound to ask, and you will find questions from others that you never thought of.
