Do you have expired marine flares?

Flares made in 2021 or earlier will expire this year, as Transport Canada designates a four-year lifespan for them. They should be replaced every three to four boating seasons.

To dispose of expired flares:

Don’t place them in household garbage: Flares cannot be disposed of in regular trash or at household hazardous waste facilities due to their risks of explosion and fire.

Don’t ignite them: Flares are strictly for emergencies, and lighting them in non-distress situations, such as when decommissioning, is illegal

Never toss them into the water: Marine flares contain harmful chemicals that can contaminate waterways and drinking water sources.

We’re here to help boaters!
CanBoat / NautiSavoir volunteers are hosting FREE Safety Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Days to collect expired marine flares for neutralization and disposal.

In the past the Galley Guys have travelled far and wide to great locations to explore the good life on a boat. However, this year we stayed in our own backyard for a real treat; cruising The Trent Severn Waterway.
