POTW: Two for the price of none

Bluewater Cruising POTW

July 26, 2018

POTW input is irresistible, so this time you get a couple. And don’t forget to send your own Photo of the Week to us at cyonboard@kerrwil.com with POTW in the subject line. Thanks!

This fist shot is irresistible and came from an article submitted to our BC editor, Bob Nicoll by The Bluewater Cruising Association’s about their August Rendezvous at Pender Island.

The second is from Elle Bruce who writes:

Hello!

I took the photo attached at last weekend’s Sailfest Sarnia Regatta at the Sarnia Yacht Club on Lake Huron and would like to share it in your POTW section.

BACK STORY:

The Sailfest Regatta is one of the favorites on the Ontario dinghy summer regatta race circuit. The folks at Sarnia Yacht club are wonderfully hospitable; offering racers the ability to camp on site, and breakfast, lunch (delivered on the water) and dinner is included with the registration fee! And did I mention the free coffee from the Tim Horton’s truck that parks on site? Very popular with sailors, coaches and parents alike! The fleet of volunteers, organizers and donors required to make all this happen definitely deserve a big thank you!

Once again the Ontario Sailing Team sent their top-notch coaches down to run a youth development clinic on the Friday before the regatta, however with heavy winds and big waves most of the day was spent on land with theory and video talks. After these sessions, a handful of experienced and/or adventurous sailors headed out on the water.

Conditions for the racing on Saturday and Sunday were by contrast very light. Add to that a stronger current then many are used to and wind lines of various strength filling across the course and it is understandable that most of the sailors found it tricky to find success. Colin Davies, member of the Ontario Sailing Team, managed figure things out quickly though and winning 4 out 6 races became the regatta winner in the Laser Radial Fleet.

The photo above is of Colin Davies (Ontario Sailing Team member and the winner of the Sarnia Sailfest 2018 regatta in the 43 boat Laser Radial Fleet) out for a blast on that heavy wind Friday.

Nimbus 365 Coupe – A real long-stay cruising boat for exploring

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. Some are day cruisers; some are centre console fishing boats or designed for tow sports. A new live-aboard cabin boat has become a rare item these days.

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
