Hi John

Since you’re in the area, you probably are aware with our programs. I’ve been racing at the Midland Bay Sailing Club for over 20 years and been race director for 8.
Our Wednesday night PHRF ‘beer can’ racing has always been well attended. We have a significant shark fleet with their separate one design scoring. Dinghy Racing is up this summer with many of the instructors participating. More dinghy racers own their own boats, the Albacore and Wayfair favoured.

What hasn’t been well attended are the weekend distance races. Many of these races have been going on since the 60s where most if not all club members would participate. The Guys n Gals fun race once had over 50 boats on the line. We still run it in conjunction with Bayport but turnout has been sparse. I would attribute this downturn to sailors in our area getting bigger boats and a shift to cruising our beautiful Georgian Bay.

Hope this info helps

Hi John,
Racing at Whitby Yacht Club is doing well. We have two junior teams from our sailing school racing all over Lake Ontario. Our club has the regular fleet PHRF racing on Wednesday night which is fairly well attended.

Probably the best news is our new Tuesday night one class racing, we have a fleet of Sharks racing, this is a very enthusiastic crowd and the fleet is growing, we expect to have over twenty Sharks in out fleet eventually maybe even more as word is starting to spread.

So I think we can say racing is doing well, at least at Whitby Yacht Club.

J/70s.  Nah the J/80 fleet is at least twice as big as them.

Cheers.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
