If you have four hours to enjoy a fine tour of one of Canada’s most interesting waterways (let’s face it, these days we can all find four hours!) you will love this doc that is boat ride looking at the Rideau as you might yourself.

Launching in their 1948 mahogany Shepard runabout, Miss Geneva, Randy and Dawn McKendry cast off to begin TRIPPING the Rideau Canal begins just outside of Manotick, Ontario at a 160-year-old gristmill. Miss Geneva heads north; the trip travels through four different lock stations, many of which, remarkably, are still operated by hand with their original equipment from 1832.

The Rideau Canal is operated by Parks Canada and was designated a National Historic Site in 1925 and a UNESCO Heritage site in 2007. Opened in 1832, the Rideau Canal is now a National Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Canal is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America.

Randy McKendry is currently the President of the Manotick Classic Boat Club (MCBC), which is a chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS). Dawn serves as a MCBC board member and is the chairperson for their club’s annual boat show. They live in Manotick and have a home on the Rideau River, so the boat is kept right in their back yard.

“We think this was our most important task, to allow the viewer to experience the Rideau Canal without interruption but also give them enough information to have a deep understanding of this important historic waterway,” says Mitch Azaria, Executive Producer at Good Earth Productions, producers of this documentary. “We wanted to do this in a way that did not interrupt the immersive experience. It was a challenge and we think we were successful.”

Owning a runabout or personal watercraft enables boaters to do unique explorations not possible with larger cruisers. The only additional equipment needed is a good tow vehicle and trailer. This way, you can launch wherever there’s a handy ramp to embark on new trailer boating adventures. 

One of the most enjoyable and memorable is touring in Muskoka, Ontario. Dubbed “the Malibu of the North” by the New York Times, Muskoka has attracted the rich and famous since the latter 1800’s. Its cottaging celebrities include Martin Short, Steven Spielberg, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Tom Hanks, Harry Hamlin, Cindy Crawford, Ted Rogers, Kenny G, Bill Murray, Kevin O’Leary, along with many sports and business luminaries. During the summer, the Muskoka population swells as tens of thousands of pretty well heeled cottagers take advantage of fun in the sun on its clear and sparkling waters.

The Coast Mountain Range and the Insular Mountains that form Vancouver Island make it a truly unique geographical area. Generally it is a region of heavy precipitation, but the mild temperatures and long frost-free periods are the rule and that certainly doesn’t categorize it as Canadian.

Prior to the white seamen arriving in the area now known as the Uplands, some dozen or so native groups who all spoke Salish inhabited and played lacrosse on the sandy beaches that still remain on the coast from Sidney to Beecher Bay. These were coastal, seafaring tribes who always travelled by water, never land, and were, for the most part peaceful.

Just off Fitz Hugh Sound, Fish Egg Inlet boasts a maze of islets and a multitude of anchorages, all waiting to be discovered.

Of all the boating we’ve done along the Inside Passage, one of our favourite cruising areas lies just north of Cape Caution. Once past this aptly named cape, we usually make a beeline up Fitz Hugh Sound to revisit anchorages we first pulled into 20 years ago.
