Sailing on Martin 244

For many people the cost of buying, docking and maintaining a sailboat makes no sense, and especially when you consider the time commitments. There is, however, another way to make your dreams of sailing on the West Coast a reality.

For Vancouverites, a red foresail sweeping across the bay, signals that someone is sailing with the Jib Set. For over 20 years Jib Set has been a true sailing community that fosters mentoring, seamanship, and most of all fun.

The club’s objectives for its members is to fully experience the sport, art and science of sailing while having loads of fun along the way.

The Jib Set is run by its members. If enthusiasts want to learn to sail or you are an experienced sailor who just doesn’t want the expense of maintaining your own boat or you’re looking for an exciting way to get on the water, you should look into the Jib Set. The club provides affordable lessons that are Sail Canada accredited. Once a course is completed there is a crew mentoring program in boat handling that lead you to become a skipper.

The club provides unlimited recreational sailing, day trips to Bowen Island and weekend flotillas in the summer. There are weekly Friday night races where beginners are encouraged to sign up as crew. It’s the best way to hone your skills as a sailor.

Finally, there are many social activities and parties that are held frequently in the clubhouse called “the Crow’s Nest”. There are also frequent casual barbecues after the Friday night races.
There are free programs in core competencies such as boat control, safety on the water, navigation, engine and rank maintenance, ropes and knots, passage planning for cruising, cooking at sea, radio communications and electronics. The list goes on and on.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
