After years of contemplation, discussion and planning, ground was finally broken for the much-anticipated DYC clubhouse in the summer of 2017. Rising to the challenge from a few logistical hiccups the planning committee has done an admirable job getting the project to the finish line.

The grand opening on June 23, 2018 was eight years in the making and in true DYC fashion was nothing short of an extravaganza!! During a member’s only sneak-a peek tour in March members could visualize the artist’s conception of the ideal nautical dwelling rising from the ground.

Applying lessons learned from Hurricane Juan’s flood levels, when some people awoke to find a boat in their backyard, the clubhouse is elevated above the recorded storm surge that did considerable damage to all yacht clubs in the area. On the weekend of the preview the storm surge from a passing nor’easter flooded areas of downtown Halifax, but the clubhouse was high and dry.

Aside from the Spring sneak-a-peak I purposely stayed away from the club, so I could enjoy the “OH WOW!” effect. In my 12 years of membership at DYC, I have never before been forced to park outside of the club because the lot was full.

With ample space, cathedral ceiling, and panoramic view of Canada’s historic Bedford Basin, the clubhouse is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Instantly I felt like I was walking onto a movie set only I knew all the actors. Kudos to the architectural team and the craftsmen who have given the building a soul.

It is safe to say that DYC has raised the bar with its state of the art clubhouse to compliment one of the best the marina systems east of Montreal. DYC’s new found grandeur and is already attracting new members as a quick dock walk shows boats with logos from other clubs now taking up residence at DYC.

Just when you thought you might never see the Galley Guys again, there they were waving from the flying bridge of a Le Boat Horizon 3 gliding down the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) in the sun. Glorious!
