Ships to Shore: Kaiwo Maru
May 2 - May 3
Set in historic Steveston’s Garry Point Park, Ships to Shore celebrates the visit of one of the world’s largest tall ships, the magnificent Kaiwo Maru. This sail training vessel is operated by the Japan Agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers, which trains future navigators and engineers. The ship is 361-feet long, 182-feet high, and boasts four masts and 36 sails that total 30,000 square feet. It was last in Richmond in 2017 and drew 75,000 visitors!
Ships to Shore is also a unique opportunity for families and maritime enthusiasts to celebrate Richmond’s connection to the sea, alongside the Kaiwo Maru and its cultural ties. A limited number of tickets are now available on shipstoshore.ca for visitors to board the ship. Other highlights include interactive workshops on traditional Japanese crafts like gyotaku and koinobori, live music across three stages (including headliners Cookin’ with Brass and Coco Project), and kite demonstrations from professionals and local amateurs.
