West Vancouver Yacht Club’s race hits milestone year

Southern Straits Sailboat Race

The 45th Annual Southern Straits Classic is set for March 29-31, 2013.  The West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) is making preparations to host its Annual Southern Straits Classic for the 45th time. The Easter Weekend racing tradition will see sailors criss-crossing Georgia Strait testing their strategy, skill, and endurance while racing overnight in early season conditions.
 
The Classic Short, Medium, and Long courses range from 55 to 132 nautical miles. The race committee has redesigned the Medium course, eliminating the leg from Ballenas Is. to Entrance Is., opening it up to new tactics for racers.

New this year is the introduction of an inshore course to be conducted in daylight hours. This course is designed for sport boats or teams that may not be ready for the full Straits experience but are looking for a challenge outside English Bay.
 
*Register before Friday, February 15th to receive a 10% discount on registration fees. *
**Register before Sunday, March 3rd to be entered in the Early Bird Prize Draw. **
         
WVYC is inviting all racers to participate in this challenging yachting tradition.
     
The races will take place over the weekend of March 29th -31st, 2013.
Starting sequences will begin at 10:25 a.m.

Vancouver International Boat Show Marks 50 Years in Style

Timing is everything. The Vancouver International Boat Show, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, could not have picked a better time to return to BC Place, and to move its In-Water Display to the ideal venue, Granville Island Marina. The show returns to BC Place after a two-year absence: in 2010 it was displaced by the Winter Olympics, which used the stadium for opening and closing ceremonies, while in 2011 renovations at BC Place shifted the show to the new Vancouver Convention Centre, a smaller venue.

The show runs Wednesday to Sunday, February 8-12.

Shelter Island Marina has acquired the 150-ton Travel Lift from nearby Bracewell Marine Group and has expanded their marine services. Shelter Island is a full-service marina with a dedicated wash bay with the latest filtration and water-cleaning systems and a number of associated service providers. Services include boat cleaning and detailing, bottom painting, full mechanical, electrical and electronic systems installation and repair, and shipwright services in wood, fiberglass, steel and aluminum.

Late Breaking News – Boaters Unite, Fees Gyrate

The lockage and moorage fees on two of Canada’s most popular recreational waterways, the Trent Severn and the Rideau have been bouncing up and down dramatically in the past little while as your Federal Government tries to cut costs.

If you have read Bob Eaton’s article on page 48 in this issue, you saw the headline, “…Trouble On Ontario’s Canal Systems” and hopefully followed the progression of Government efforts to cut costs by cutting hours, cutting manpower and cutting services on the Trent Severn and the Rideau. You would also have learned about the widespread backlash that stimulated and the public letters later released by Minister Peter Kent reinstating hours and continuing the open season until Thanksgiving 2012 as in past years, but you might not have picked up the subtle hint that user fees increases were in the works.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
