Doing good and giving back to the community has never been more fun! On June 23, Port Credit Yacht Club hosted the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta (TAHR) the annual charity sailing event with net proceeds going to support a local hospice. For the past two years, TAHR has fundraised for the Ian Anderson Hospice (IAH) which is Ontario’s first in-resident cancer hospice that offers, without charge, quality end-of-life palliative care in a home-like setting to individuals diagnosed with terminal cancer and a limited life expectancy. In order for IAH to offer the medical care and the number of staff that is expected and necessary in a hospice environment an additional $900,000.00 a year must be raised for annual operating costs, as they rely heavily on private funding.

TAHR at PCYCThis fundraiser once again was a huge success this year thanks to all the sponsors, members, guests, family, and friends who showed up and supported and as a result, the funds raised by TAHR has been the largest amount ever raised by a third party fundraiser in their 20 year history and they look forward to making next year even bigger and better as they open their doors to more clubs, boats, sponsors, and guests.

It provides a fine opportunity way to get out on the water, do some racing, get people involved, socialize, enjoy each other’s company, all while raising funds and awareness for a great cause that is close to our hearts. Despite the overcast Toronto weather, the regatta was jam packed with excitement from the boat race to all the live entertainment, food, and drinks back on shore.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
